Storage Hints

The staff at Warrigal Rd Self Store have had years of experience helping people use self storage.
We try to make the move as easy as possible. Here are a few hints to help you get the most of your storage space.

Boxes: Tape up the bottom of all boxes for reinforcement. The heavier the items, the smaller the boxes you should use. Label all cartons containing fragile items and avoid storing heavy items on the top of these cartons.

Fridge/freezer/washing machine: Be sure to thoroughly defrost and clean to prevent any moisture or mildew from damaging any of your other valuables. Store with the fridge door slightly ajar with a deodoriser inside, eg box of baking soda, to maintain its freshness.

Mattress: Should be covered and stored on their end to minimize the space they take up. If using a plastic cover, ensure there is enough circulation by making cuts to the plastic.

Breakables/glassware: Do not stack heavy items on top of cartons containing breakables. Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and top of cartons containing breakables. Protect fragile items by wrapping them individually in packing paper (newsprint can be very messy and possibly stain). Nest cups and bowls, stand plates, saucers, platters, casseroles on their edge.
To keep your fragile items well protected and prevent movement  in the cartons whilst in transit, fill any gaps in the cartons with packing eg. scrunch paper or linen.  Crystalware should be stored in acid free tissue paper to avoid discoloration.

Clothing/Manchester: Store in port-a-robes or striped carry bags. Include some naphthalene or moth balls.

Arranging your unit:

  1. Try to use the full height of the unit.
  2. Place the items you will most often need to access at the front of the unit.
  3. If working from the unit, try to create walking and moving space within the unit.
  4. Stack light boxes on top of heavy ones.
  5. Protect your furniture with drop sheets or similar
  6. If tables do not dismantle, lay the table top on the ground with the legs up. Make sure the table top is protected.
  7. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on upholstered or leather furniture.
  8. DO NOT store anything combustible. ie. paint thinner, petrol, solvents, paint, matches, gas cylinders etc.
